A desire for a more efficient, safe, comfortable, and durable rooftop tent (RTT) first emerged during a tour of South Africa with a soft-shell RTT. While the experience created lasting memories, I felt there was room for improvement. This sparked my inspiration to innovate and enhance the functionality of rooftop tents.

Here’s my story.

I’m Jason Matthews, an outdoor enthusiast with a passion for weekend getaways and exploring the world right on our doorstep. I envisioned KipTop's hard-sided rooftop tent with a focus on durability, comfort, and efficiency.

With an engineering background, I started with design concepts and eventually built my first RTT. While it functioned as intended, I considered it a ‘working prototype,’ though the ladies in my family called it a ‘pure prototype.’ Not settling for anything less than perfection, I went back to the drawing board—and built another—and another—and another. Through continuous refinements, I’ve developed a product that’s been tested in some of Africa’s toughest terrains and climates. The first market-spec tent was road-tested for over 15,000km and subjected to more than 400 opening and closing cycles.

I am confident that any customer who purchases my tent will have a durable, comfortable, and efficient rooftop tent that will create many happy memories for years to come.
